Case Study

Understanding Basic Needs and Living Wage

Factory Transformation

The Challenge

Many organizations are familiar with statutory wage requirements but have limited understanding of how living wages are calculated and how worker income relates to basic household needs. This often creates a gap between compliance and a deeper understanding of worker well-being.

CRE's Approach

CRE conducted a comprehensive training program on Basic Needs Wage (BNW) and Living Wage methodologies. Participants were guided through the calculation of food costs using a bread basket survey, nutritional requirements, housing expenses, non-food and non-housing costs, and the influence of statutory deductions, bonuses, and benefits on worker earnings.

The program provided practical tools and real-world examples to help organizations understand wage adequacy from a worker's perspective.

The Outcome

The factory developed a clear understanding of Basic Needs Wage and Living Wage calculations, enabling management to make informed decisions regarding worker compensation, social responsibility initiatives, and sustainability commitments. The program strengthened awareness of the relationship between wages, worker well-being, and long-term organizational sustainability.

Impact: Enhanced understanding of living wage principles, enabling the factory to evaluate worker compensation through the lens of basic human needs, social responsibility, and sustainable business practices.
